The Grand Union Flag was the first de facto flag of the United States (1771-1777) during the Revolutionary War. This flag featured 13 red and white stripes to represent the colonies and the Union Jack to show alliance with the British. It was first flown on the USS Alfred by John Paul Jones on December 3rd, 1775, and later by Washington at Prospect Hill on January 2nd, 1776.
The Flag Act of 1777 was a critical moment in American history, as it marked the first official adoption of the United States flag by the Continental Congress on June 14th, 1777. This act established the flag’s design as 13 stripes, alternating red and white, representing the original 13 colonies, alongside 13 stars, white on a blue field, symbolizing a new constellation.
